Biography

Chrystian J. Gonzalez is an experienced attorney dedicated to fairness, service, and accountability in the justice system. He currently serves as a Children’s Court Attorney for the New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department in Las Cruces, where he advocates for the safety, well-being, and legal rights of the community’s most vulnerable children and families. Chrystian brings extensive experience in the very matters that come before the Magistrate Court. As a former Assistant District Attorney, he managed a full criminal caseload at the magistrate level, conducting jury trials, bench trials, and motion hearings; developing trial strategy and managing caseloads; and working closely with law enforcement, victims, and the public. This firsthand experience gave him deep insight into the daily operations of magistrate courts and the importance of timely, fair, and clear decision-making at every stage of the legal process.

In private practice, Chrystian served clients across southern New Mexico as a family law and civil litigation attorney, handling divorce, custody, property disputes, and protective order matters. He also represented clients in civil and landlord-tenant disputes, both core areas within Magistrate Court jurisdiction. This unique blend of criminal and civil experience ensures he approaches every case with balance, broad legal understanding, and respect for the real-life impact judicial decisions have on families, tenants, landlords, and small business owners.

Earlier in his career, Chrystian also worked as a mediator and Social Security disability representative, strengthening skills essential to the bench: impartial listening, conflict resolution, and careful application of the law with compassion and clarity. Chrystian is committed to advancing the legal profession and improving access to justice. He currently serves as Treasurer of the Southern New Mexico Bar Association and as a member of the Board of Bar Commissioners for the State Bar of New Mexico. The Board helps guide statewide programs that support attorneys and expand public access to legal resources—work that ensures a stronger, fairer legal system for all New Mexicans. As a founding member of the Third Judicial District Court’s Pro Bono Committee, he has also been recognized statewide as a leader in pro bono service for his contributions to organizing and consistently volunteering at free legal clinics and offering representation to individuals who would otherwise have no access to legal help.

Service has always been at the center of Chrystian’s life. He is bilingual (English/Spanish) and has volunteered throughout his life as a catechism teacher, food bank assistant, and participant in Loaves and Fishes food delivery runs. As an attorney, he continues that dedication through consistent pro bono work and community outreach. A graduate of the Texas Tech University School of Law and the University of Texas at Austin, Chrystian’s commitment to service began long before his legal career. Prior to attending college, he served as an enlisted member of the United States Air Force, supporting several post-9/11 wartime operations overseas. The discipline, integrity, and sense of duty learned during his military service remain at the heart of his work in the law.

Outside the courtroom, Chrystian devotes his time to his family, working on DIY home projects, and serving as Vice President of his local International Lions Club chapter, promoting community service initiatives across the region, including support for emergency assistance efforts for the residents of Ruidoso and neighboring counties. Chrystian approaches every matter with diligence, determination, and unwavering respect for the law. If elected Magistrate Court Judge for Division 5 in Doña Ana County, he will bring a balanced, experienced, and community-focused perspective to the bench—ensuring accessible, efficient, and fair justice for all.
